NCOIL to Discuss Public Adjuster Legislative Reforms
Several states have recently taken action to either establish or update professional standards for public adjusters1. Specifically, state legislatures in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Illinois, and Indiana passed bills this year establishing more controls on public adjusters2.
As a reminder, a public adjuster is an independent insurance professional that a policyholder may hire to help settle an insurance claim on his or her behalf3. Your insurance company provides an adjuster at no charge to you, while a public adjuster has no relationship with your insurance company, and charges a fee consisting of a percentage, which varies by State often between 10% and 33%, of the insurance settlement for his or her services4.
